Polymer Clay Burger Tutorial

A beginners guide to making a burger from polymer clay. I decided to make mine into a magnet, if you don't want to make a magnet, then just leave those steps out.

Polymer Clay:
  • Tan
  • Brown
  • Green
  • Yellow
  • Red

First I prepared all the colours I need. I started with the tan clay to prepare the bread.
First, roll the clay into a ball.

Next, flatten the clay to make the bottom piece of bread. Do the same for the top piece of bread but make the top more domed shaped to give it a burger look.

The burger bun should look something like this. Make sure the top and the bottom are the same size.

Then you'll need brown chalk pastel and a paintbrush

Use the paint brush to put the brown chalk onto the buns to make it look like a baked bun. Make sure its well blended. Don't do the reverse sides of the bun.

The buns should now look like this.

If you are making your burger into a magnet then place the magnet on the bottom bun, if not then just skip this step.

Gently press the magnet into the clay to create a little indent from the magnet.

Remove the magnet, you don't need to bake it with the magnet.

Next, roll the brown clay into a ball to make the burger patty.

Flatten it into a patty shape, making sure it is the same size as the burger bun. I didn't smooth out the cracks as I felt it added to the texture of the meat.

Now you will need a stylus tool. If you don't have one you can use the end of a paintbrush.

Use the tool to texture the meat. You don't have to do both sides.

Here's the textured burger meat.

Next we'll make the lettuce. Using a roller flatten the green clay.

Once the green is flattened, rip off pieces of and use the stylus to flatten the edges to give it a lettuce look.

Moving onto the tomato, roll a small ball and flatten it into a small circle.

Then, using a pointed stylus (if you don't have one a toothpick will work) create little indents in the flattened circle to give it a tomato effect.

Take the yellow clay and flatten it with the roller.

Use a blade to cut the yellow into a small square to create the cheese, make sure your cheese is the correct size to fit onto your burger. You don't want it too small that it won't be visible or too big that it hides other components.

Now you can build your burger. Place the pieces of lettuce around the edge of the bottom bun and the meat on top of that.

Then you can place the slice of cheese over the meat.

Position your tomatoes over the cheese in a way you like.

You can then place the top bun where you want it. I like it at an angle to show the tomatoes nicely. If you want to add sesame seeds you can use tiny pieces of white clay. You can also use real sesame seeds. If you want to make it into a charm, now would be a good time to add an eye pin.

Now it's time to bake! bake your burger as per the instructions of the clay you have used.

When your burger is done baking and you are not turning it into a magnet, this is what it will look like and you're done!

If you are making it into a magnet, you'll need some clear strong clue. The clay doesn't bond with the magnet so it would just fall off.

Glue the magnet into the indent in the bottom of the bun and allow to dry.

And you're done!
